Frequently Asked Questions

Commercial operations of drones is a fairly new industry. However with the addition of recent regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration, it’s now become easier to know how we can legally capture the drone video you need. Those same regulations have helped us answer most of the questions that we get asked by clients. If you have more specefic questions please send them to us with the contact form below.
Can you fly anywhere?
The answer is yes, but some areas require more lead time. If your location is in an area of uncontrolled airspace we can fly there today. However, if your location is in controlled airspace we will need some lead time to get permission from the FAA to fly there. If you’re not sure what airspace your location is in just drop us a line and we can look it up for you.
When can you fly?
Currently the Federal Aviation Administration regulations state that a commercial operator can only fly during daylight hours. If you need us to fly at night though we can apply for a waiver, it just takes up to 90 days of lead time.
Does a drone pilot need to be licensed?
Yes. As of August 29th, 2016 any drone operator that is doing commercial work must hold an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate with a sUAS rating. All of our pilots are holders of this certificate and rating.
Does a drone pilot need to be insured?
While insurance is not a requirement from the Federal Aviation Administration, to fly without it is very foolish. On all of our flights we cary $1,000,000.00 worth of liability insurance. Whether you use San Diego Drone Operator, or another drone operator, please make sure they are insured.
Per project pricing and half day full day rates are also available.
